Have you ever known someone to suffer from foot pain? Have you ever known someone say they need orthotics? Many people turn to pain-relievers for foot pain. Problem solved or is it? Is foot pain caused by being born with not enough medicine in the body? Of course not. Medicine may temporarily cover the problem but it does not fix the cause. Without fixing the cause, the pain most always returns.

Since foot pain can make the slightest step painful, people often overdo it with pain medication: dangerous because pain medicine can be highly addictive. What is foot pain? It is a symptom: the body’s way of alerting us that something is wrong. True or false. Foot pain can develop over time from walking around with a misaligned spine. True and especially when the low back and pelvis are out of proper alignment. Try it yourself. Walk across the room with one hip raised; note your feet hitting the floor abnormally.

How about a jeopardy question? The proper term to describe the personal manner of walking, including foot timing and sequence, is? Hint: the term is commonly used upon describing a horse’s trot. What is: Gait. Everyone has their own gait. Do you walk quickly? You have a quick gait. Anything that comprises the pattern of movement is part of a person’s gait. Stresses within the spine that can result in symptoms such as foot problems are called spinal subluxation.

Subluxation, what’s that? A subluxation is a condition in which a spinal segment is out of alignment with the adjacent segment. Nerves, which branch off of the spinal cord no longer properly work. On the other hand, some people are born with poor foot structure. In that case, spinal subluxations are often the result of foot problems, rather than the only cause. How about another jeopardy question? Having either flat or high these can cause foot pain and cramping. Hint: the word also describes a curved structure. What is: arch. The arch is the shape of a foot’s bottom.

A flat arch, causes the entire bottom of the foot to hit the ground when walking. Not good because the foot and spine become the shock-absorbers. A high arch results in too much pressure upon the ball of the foot. A high heel creates that scenario but those born with a high arch experiences it all the time. What are orthotics? Can they help? Proper orthotics are more than just pharmacy-sold arch supports. Orthotics are insoles, custom-made to guide the foot into proper biomechanics.

For instance, if someone’s foot turns inward, orthotics cause foot to land on the orthotics preventing the foot from further turning. Cool fact. Inward foot turning is called pronation. Outward foot turning is called supination. Both are problematic. How does one know the exact cause of their foot pain? By visiting a chiropractor. By analyzing gait as well as locating spinal subluxations. A chiropractor determines the best course of action: spinal adjustments, and if necessary orthotics.

Orthotics alone are not enough. Without the removal of spinal subluxations, one is still walking around with improper body biomechanics and foot problems continue. Chiropractors can help relieve foot pain, without drugs or surgery. You can’t get better than that. Do you have a friend or a loved one who suffers from foot pain? Ask your chiropractor for a copy of foot and orthotics information to pass along so that your loved one can finally find relief and live the life they’ve always imagine.

You can help change someone’s life. What could feel better than that? Pain is such an uncomfortable feeling that even a tiny amount of it is enough to ruin every enjoyment. – Will Rogers.
